Happy Easter!
Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
Well, belated Easter, that is. Another Easter come and gone… I was a little disappointed in myself that I didn’t eat any pastel colored candy when my sister and brother-in-law came to the rescue.
Oh yes, folks. That would be PASTEL COLORED CANDY CORN.
Somewhere, somehow, God heard my prayers.
After church, we came back to a not-so-traditional but delicious Easter meal.
Adam very thoughtfully assembled his plate very nicely so that I would take a picture of it for my blog
Don’t worry, there was shrimp added onto the plate later.
Japanese potato croquette!
And my mom made me a mini-one
Lots of un-photographed, good stuff.
My mom and I also colored Easter eggs the night before but my sister took half of them home before I remembered to snap a photo of them. She took most of the nice ones that my mom made. We had a fruit theme going on this year, so there was melon, grapes, bananas, PINEAPPLES, oranges…etc.
Here’s my Paris egg, complete with Mona Lisa, a beret, wine…
…the Eiffel Tower, mustache, baguettes…
I made a sun egg and a moon egg…
Oh, and here’s my pineapple…
“Happy Easter” made by my mom…
…with Easter eggs on the other side.
And here’s my infamous watermelon
Another colorful design by my mom…
…and an Easter bunny made by moi (that’s me, practicing my French).
I hope you all had a lovely Spring weekend! It’s almost 80 degrees and sunny here in NYC
Stay tuned for an amazing cake recipe!
Indian Cafe
Tuesday, February 15th, 2011
For some reason, Sonoko was really surprised that I liked Indian food. It’s been a while since I’ve had it only because I hate going to the Lower East Side – transfers are high on the list of “Things Shion Doesn’t Like Doing”. But there’s a pretty good Indian restaurant called Indian Cafe near my work, so we headed over there last weekend.
I started off with a Riesling, which seems to be my go-to white wine lately.
This time, I decided to branch out a little and get the Saag Paneer which is a spinach sauce with chunks of cheese in it.
And of course, we had to order naan. Why is it so good?! So pillow-y and chewy.
Sonoko got the lamb korma (which is what I usually get) and I think I liked it better than the Saag Paneer. Next time, I’ll just stick to what I know I like
Yesterday, I got a surprise at work when I received a package in the mail!
Sonoko kept hinting that I would get something this week, so I figured it would be for Valentine’s Day, even though she claims to not celebrate the holiday
Sure enough, on Monday morning, I had a package waiting at the mail room. Woot!
It looked like a flower box and while I would have been perfectly content with flowers on my desk, I was hoping it was going to be food.
…and it was!!! My sister and brother-in-law know me so well. It was a cookie bouquet! Yum… I dug into one immediately, of course.
Thanks, Sonoko!
Happy Holidays!
Tuesday, December 28th, 2010
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!
Although, is it even over yet? Does New Years count as part of “the holidays”? In any case, the Shion ornaments say: happy holidays.
This year, my parents really outdid themselves. Our tree is about 12 feet tall AND they had to saw off at least half a foot!
As you can see, we couldn’t even fit a star on top of the tree!
Here’s the tree with Sonoko to get a little perspective…
BIG. Massive. Beautiful. Best Christmas Tree EVER.
And let’s bring it all back to little baby Jesus, shall we?
This Christmas, the sibs got my mom Joseph. I was telling my dad, who is Buddhist/Shinto about how we got Joseph this year, and here is the conversation that ensued:
Shi: We got Joseph this year.
Dad: Who’s Joseph?!
Shi: Um…Jesus’ DAD
Dad: What are you talking about? Mary was a single mother!
…sigh. Someone doesn’t listen in church…
For Christmas lunch, we packed a lunch and headed to Westchester to spend the afternoon with my brother-in-law who just got shoulder surgery and was unable to make it to Christmas Eve service.
Hostess with the Mostess…
The portable spread:

The dessert:
Sonoko made this beautiful and delicious German chocolate cake. Possibly the best I’ve ever had!!! It was moist, not too sweet, and perfectly topped with coconut.

The sistas:
My brother didn’t make it back from Seattle this year, but we were thinking about him the whole day! He got us some great presents though, and really, isn’t that all that matters? Just kidding… (let’s bring it back to baby Jesus, folks)
Adam wouldn’t let me take a picture of him and I only acquiesced because he was wearing a mafia outfit. And because he was in a sling and in pain. Otherwise, I totally would’ve taken a photo and put it online with his full name and address
After lunch, I took a quick nap (I was miserably sick on Christmas) and then me and my parents headed to Amy’s house for Christmas dinner. I didn’t take a picture of the dinner because I felt a little awkward but imagine a feast that could’ve fed a small country. I kid you not. And everything was delicious.
But here’s dessert!
(obviously I took a picture of that)
So so many wonderful treats! Including my mint oreo bon bons, which I believe rivals my red velvet bon bons. Yes, that’s right. I will post the recipe for that soon!
Hope you all had a joyous holiday season! Thanks for reading the blog
