First Time Mussels
My friend Erin and I have been talking about making mussels for quite some time now. She has a great mussels recipe and I’ve never made them myself so I went over to her house the other day to not only eat a delicious meal but to also get a tutorial.
I have to say, I’m scared to death of touching anything that is living…that is not human…or a weird looking plant…which I guess would fall into the category of “not human.”
Anyway, as you know, mussels need to be cooked alive so cooking with them was a bit daunting for me.
Thankfully, I was mostly the observer. My job was to chop veggies
Erin used a Tyler Florence recipe but since it doesn’t seem to be online, I can’t share it. BUTÂ this one is pretty close.
We used a pretty strong curry powder so it was wonderfully spicy! The recipe also had garlic, onion, white wine, butter, and some other ingredients.
It didn’t take very long to cook the mussels, surprisingly. It took maybe 30 minutes? Something like that…
And here’s our meal with a lovely asparagus and tomato salad.
My plate:
Multiply this by like…three?
Soooooo yummy! I’m not sure I feel confident enough to make them on my own but at least I know how

The trick for me of overcoming any fears of cooking mussels was when I realized that you can make enough to feed a crowd for about half the cost (if not less) of a restaurant and it takes about 10 minutes longer than when you order them out too.
I was asked by my husband, Joe, to share his step-by-step mussle recipe:
Step 1 – If you want mussles, be nice to Erin,
Step 2 – Be nice to Erin
Step 3 – Ask Erin to make mussles
Step 4 – Enjoy
